Most unmanned vehicle access control systems rely on some sort of card, token or proximity device to gain access to a site or parking area. This method of control is quite acceptable when a relatively low number of personnel use the system. However, if the system is required to allow access to a wide variety of different vehicles such as a public car park, hotel etc the need to issue some form of physical “key” to each user can become very impractical.
Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) is a system that automatically reads the number plate of every vehicle and checks it against a database of users before allowing entry. This is what an ANPR system does using a specially designed digital camera linked to the server with ANPR software.
